Mother and 2-year-old son seriously hurt in Mineola crash, Nassau police say
A 29-year-old woman and her 2-year-old son were seriously injured when their car collided head-on with a Jeep on Wednesday evening on Old Country Road in Mineola, police said.
Nassau County police said the crash occurred near Wisteria Avenue at 6:06 p.m.
The drivers of the Jeep and a third vehicle that was struck in the collision suffered minor injuries, police said.
Police did not release the identities of anyone involved but said the crash remained under investigation Thursday by detectives from the Homicide Squad. That is standard procedure in crashes involving serious or life-threatening injuries.
Police said the 29-year-old woman was driving east on Old Country Road when her 2019 Nissan Sentra was involved in a head-on collision with a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude traveling west. A Chevrolet Equinox driven west by a 41-year-old man was then struck. Three passengers in the Equinox, identified as a 35-year-old woman and two girls, ages 6 and 3, were not injured in the crash.
The driver of the Sentra and her son suffered what police called "extensive traumatic injuries" in the crash and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Their conditions remained unclear Thursday morning.
