Firefighters extinguished a blaze that consumed an apartment in Hempstead on Tuesday afternoon, a Hempstead Fire Department spokesman said.

Fire officials received a call about a first floor apartment in flames on Elk Street at about 2:13 p.m., the spokesman said. The blaze was quickly put out.

No one was injured, he said.

The building had 20 units, but it was unclear Tuesday night how many people lived inside the apartment or how many people were displaced by the blaze.

The spokesman said the Nassau County fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.
