Hempstead Town has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Nassau Kings wheelchair basketball team, according to a news release.

The grant will go toward specialized sports wheelchairs, basketballs, uniforms and other items, the town’s release said.

The team was formed in 1987 and ranks first in its division in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, the release said. The team plays at Nassau Community College in Garden City and the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury.

“Providing the Kings with this grant was a ‘slam dunk’ as we at Hempstead Town are proud of the life-enhancing work that the Kings’ program performs on and off the court,” Supervisor Anthony Santino said in the release. The grant was provided through the Federal Community Block Grant Fund, town officials said. For more information, contact the town at 516-489-6000 or visit the town’s website at toh.li.
