Hempstead man accused of $6G check 'washing'

A Hempstead man working in the mailroom of AAA New York in Garden City "washed" customer checks, stealing about $6,800, Nassau County police said Friday.
Donte Fearington, 21, of 66 Spencer Pl., is charged with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree possession of a forged instrument.
He was arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead and held on a $3,000 bail.
Fearington, working at AAA New York's mailroom at 1415 Kellum Pl., took about 13 personal checks from incoming mail, police said. He used acetone to remove ink from the checks -- a process known as check washing, police said.
He then replaced the payee name with his own name and increased the dollar amounts before depositing the doctored checks into his own personal checking account, police said.
Police said Fearington forged the checks, totaling about $6,800, between Feb. 6 and Wednesday. He was arrested at his home Thursday without incident.
