Hempstead man arrested in bathroom attack

A Hempstead man who attacked another man in the bathroom of a Hempstead market on Tuesday is under arrest, police said.

Jose Nelson Oliva-Ochoa, 39, of 18 Webb Ave., walked into the bathroom of the Polo Mini Market on Fulton Avenue just before 5 p.m. Tuesday and attacked a 48-year-old man -- striking the victim "repeatedly in the head" with "an unknown object" before fleeing, Nassau County police said in a Wednesday news release.

The victim was treated at a hospital for cuts and scrapes, police said.

An investigation by Hempstead police led to an address where Oliva-Ochoa was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon.

Oliva-Ochoa was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead. He was remanded to the Nassau County Correctional Center on $500 bail or $1,000 bond.
