Hempstead man charged with attempted murder
A Hempstead man was arrested and charged with attempted murder following a shooting on a street in Hempstead Village early Sunday, Nassau County police said.
Juan Miranda, 27, of East Columbia Street, fired into a group of people walking near Fulton Avenue at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, critically wounding a 19-year-old man, police said. Miranda fled the scene after firing the weapon, but was chased down and, police said, was injured in the "violent struggle" the ensued. Police said a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver used in the shooting was recovered after one person in the group was able to disarm Miranda.
Police originally said the gun had not been recovered.
Miranda was charged with two counts of second-degree attempted murder, as well as first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree criminal use of a firearm, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
Arraignment is scheduled for Monday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
It was not immediately known what provoked the incident. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-244-TIPS.
