Hempstead man charged with trying to get license under fake name

A Hempstead man has been arrested on charges of applying for a driver's license with a fake name and providing forged documentation, police said.

Basil Johnson, 42, of 14 Martin Luther King Dr., went to a DMV office on Axinn Avenue in Garden City on March 11 and used a fictitious name and provided forged documentation in applying for a license, police said.

Police said detectives and DMV investigators arrested Johnson at his residence on Thursday after a joint investigation by Nassau County's crimes against property detectives and the state Department of Motor Vehicles. He also had seven credit and debit cards and a New York State interim license issued in a fake name, police said.

Johnson is charged with four counts of possession of a forged instrument, two counts of offering a false instrument and identity theft.

Johnson was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
