A Hempstead man was arrested Tuesday shortly after a Garden City bank robbery by police who also charged him with robbing a Hempstead bank last week.

Donald McCallum, 51, of 100 Terrace Ave., was charged with robbing the TD Bank at 855 Franklin Ave., police said. He also was charged with robbing the Capital One Bank, 611 Hempstead Tpke., Hempstead, Feb. 17.

McCallum passed a note to a TD Bank teller at 10:53 a.m., police said, and fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Responding Garden City police officers spotted him at Franklin Avenue and 11th Street, not far from the bank, police said. After a brief struggle in which four Garden City officers suffered minor injuries, McCallum was taken into custody, police said. The TD Bank's money and a stun gun were recovered from McCallum, police said.

After further investigation, Nassau County detectives also charged McCallum with the Hempstead bank robbery.

He was to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court, Hempstead, on two counts of third-degree robbery.
