Hempstead release of snowstorm response audit delayed

The release of an internal audit of Hempstead Town’s response to a snowstorm last month has been delayed.
Supervisor Laura Gillen announced the audit on Jan. 8, following the Jan. 4 snowstorm that blanketed parts of Long Island with more than a foot of snow.
Gillen had said the report and its recommendations would be released within the month.
“We’re working as quickly, yet carefully, as possible and expect to have a full report within the next two weeks,” town spokesman Mike Fricchione said in a statement Monday.
The report is expected to look at the operations of the town’s highway, sanitation and parks departments during the storm and will include an audit of current staffing and equipment levels, as well as communication and organization among the three departments.
Some residents complained on social media that their streets had not been plowed and that their calls to the town for help went unanswered. Others criticized Gillen’s attendance at a news conference with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in Suffolk County during the storm.
