The Hempstead Town Board is extending its fee waivers for superstorm Sandy victims seeking building permits and documents for storm-related repairs.

Fees are exempt until June 30 for Sandy-related structural repairs matching the original dimensions of a property and replacement repairs in unincorporated Hempstead Town communities. Village repairs follow local requirements.

The town is also waiving fees for temporary storage pods and trailers during construction. Building work can be completed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

Residents can also replace documents including birth certificates, death certificates, passports and marriage licenses free of charge through the town clerk’s office. No appointments are required, but calling ahead to Town Hall is encouraged.

The building department can be reached at 516-812-3073 or the town clerk can be reached at 516-489-5000, ext. 3046.
