Four young children suffered minor scrapes Tuesday afternoon after a car hit a fence, pushing a window into a pre-kindergarten classroom at Hofstra University's Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center in Hempstead, a university spokeswoman said.

"We are grateful no children were seriously injured," the spokeswoman, Karla Schuster, said by email.

The car had been traveling east on Hempstead Turnpike, Schuster said, at about 3 p.m. It did not strike the building, but did hit a large concrete planter designed as an earthen safety barrier, she said.

An image of the scene showed a red station wagon had come to rest at an angle on the sidewalk after breaking through the fence.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the building will remain closed tomorrow —Wednesday, Aug. 22 — to make repairs to the fence and do routine safety checks," Schuster said.
