Homeless man charged in Oyster Bay theft
Nassau County police arrested a homeless man Thursday on charges of taking items from an Oyster Bay man who had recently offered him shelter.
Police said Michael C. Coats, 19, who has no known address, had recently stayed at the home of an unidentified man, 24. The victim told police that he saw Coats on Thanksgiving morning in front of his residence wearing a hat that had been taken from the victim's car. When the victim approached Coats, he ran away.
Second Precinct officers found Coats a short distance away and arrested him at 9 a.m. During an investigation, it was determined that Coats had previously removed the victim's debit card from his bedroom and used it to withdraw about $700 in $100 increments from ATMs, police said.
Coats is charged with second-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny and second-degree identity theft. He was to be arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
