Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a Freeport man found Monday with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, police said.

Alberto Tiburcio, 25, was pronounced dead at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside at 4:34 a.m. Monday, Nassau police said, after a shooting in the vicinity of Smith Street in Freeport shortly before midnight.

Officers responded to a report of gunshots at Smith Street at 11:54 p.m. on Sunday, police said, but Tiburcio, had already been taken to the hospital, about 3 miles away, by someone unknown to investigators.

No other details were released.

Investigators asked that anyone with information concerning the case call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
