A 79-year-old woman died after Roosevelt firefighters and Nassau County police rescued her in critical condition from a house fire Wednesday evening, officials said.

Police responded to the fire on West Fulton Avenue around 5 p.m. where they found the woman critically injured in the bedroom of the two-floor home, Nassau County Fire Marshal Mike Uttaro said.

An ambulance took the woman to Nassau County University Medical Center in East Meadow where she was pronounced dead at 5:56 p.m., Nassau police said in a news release. Two police officers were taken to the hospital where they were treated for minor smoke inhalation, police said.

Roosevelt firefighters arrived within six minutes of the 911 call and about 50 firefighters from three fire departments battled the blaze for about 45 minutes, Uttaro said.

Nassau County fire marshal investigators and arson detectives were at the home Wednesday night investigating the cause of the fire.
