Ice sparks accidents on LI roadways
Icing conditions contributed to fender benders on some Long Island roadways Tuesday evening, but there were no reports from police of any serious-injury accidents.
Some lanes of the Northern State Parkway were closed temporarily to allow for state Department of Transportation sanding, as was the Long Island Expressway eastbound at Exit 52, Commack Road, and its nearby service road section, police said.
Possibly the most hazardous stretch of road was the Northern State Parkway between the Meadowbrook Parkway Exit 31A and Route 231-Deer Park Avenue at Exit 42 in Dix Hills, where state police said there were probably five to 10 fender benders between 6 and 10 p.m.
There were no unusual traffic problems on the Southern State Parkway, state police said.
