The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding a public meeting on March 15 on proposed remediation of an industrial site in Jericho.
The public hearing on the Solvent Finishers site at 601 Cantiague Rock Road is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 15 at Cantiague Elementary School, 678 Cantiague Road.
The 3.8 acre site, now occupied by a costume company, previously was the location for a manufacturer of artificial leather and plastics, an industrial dry cleaner and a manufacturer of imprinted and embroidered sportswear, according to DEC documents.
The location is a Class 2 site on the state’s registry of inactive hazardous waste sites, which means it “represents a significant threat to public health or environment.”
Cantiague Elementary School is across the street from the site; the nearest residence is about 400 feet away, the DEC says.
The primary contaminants on the site are tetrachloroethene and trichloroethene, according to the DEC.
The agency is accepting public comments on the site until March 26. Comments can be sent to Robert Decandia at email@example.com or to Robert Decandia, Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Environmental Remediation, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-7015.
Documents on the project are available for viewing in the reference section of the Jericho Public Library.
