A Freeport man died after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle Saturday morning, police said.

John H. Broems, 58, was riding his 1997 Harley-Davidson west on Merrick Road in Freeport when he struck a 2000 Honda Odyssey minivan that was turning north onto Park Avenue at 9:21 a.m., according to Nassau police.

Broems suffered severe head trauma and was declared dead at a nearby hospital.

The minivan's occupants -- a 53-year-old woman and two 8-year-old boys -- were not hurt, police said.

Nassau police said they have impounded both vehicles for brake and safety checks and are continuing to investigate, but there was no apparent criminality in the crash.

The Freeport Fire Department responded to the scene and transported Broems, police said.
