2 Brooklyn men drown in South Shore waters over weekend

A Brooklyn man in Long Beach and another in Westhampton Beach drowned over the weekend, with at least one attributed to deadly rip currents, authorities said Sunday.

Kashawn Carlos, 23, who was trapped in a rip current Saturday night off Long Beach and went missing before being pulled from the water by Long Beach police, was pronounced dead at South Nassau Communities Hospital at 8:13 p.m. Saturday, police said.

"He was in the water for almost an hour," Long Beach police Sgt. Eric Irizarry said Sunday, adding Carlos was taken out of the water about 7:38 p.m.

In Westhampton Beach, another 23-year-old Brooklyn man drowned off Rogers Beach about 1:40 p.m. Saturday, village police said Sunday.

Westhampton Beach Village Police said Sunday the man, whom they did not identify, was reported struggling to leave the waters.

Four village lifeguards pulled the man from the water onto shore, where he went into cardiac arrest, police said. The lifeguards performed CPR on the man, and police later arrived and used an automatic external defibrillator.

The man was taken by Westhampton Beach Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead.

In the Long Beach drowning, lifeguards also spotted Carlos' friend, 23, about 6:30 p.m. having trouble in the water near the oceanfront Allegria Hotel, Long Beach Police Commissioner Michael Tangney said Saturday.

Lifeguards and police rescued the friend, who was not identified, and he was treated with a breathing apparatus, police said. The man told officers he was swimming with Carlos and Carlos went missing when waves pulled him under, police said.

A search for Carlos was launched by Long Beach police, lifeguards and Nassau County aviation and marine officers, who used boats and watercraft to patrol for about an hour, until they found him submerged, Tangney said.

Coast Guard officials said resources from the Jones Beach Station were dispatched and aircraft from Cape Cod also were sent to assist with the search.

Carlos was pulled ashore still alive and given CPR, police said.

Police said both men had been warned of the bad rip currents and were told to leave the water earlier in the day but they returned after lifeguards left for the day.

Long Beach lifeguards made several rescues because of riptides Saturday, including minutes earlier near Edwards Boulevard, Tangney said.
