Kellenberg Memorial High School athletic director Ed Solosky died Tuesday of injuries sustained in a morning car crash in Delaware.

Solosky, 48, was involved in a three-vehicle accident in Bridgeville around 6:42 a.m., according to Delaware police. He was taken to Nanticoke Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Westbury resident was returning home to Long Island after attending his aunt's funeral in Virginia. Solosky leaves behind a wife and two children.

According to police, Solosky's Jeep Wrangler crashed into a Nissan Cube and Penske Rental truck, both of which had stopped at a red light at the intersection of U.S. 13 and Redden Road. The Jeep failed to stop and rear-ended the truck, police said, which thrust forward and struck the rear of the Nissan.

Solosky was a 1980 graduate of Chaminade High School, and Fairfield University in 1984. He worked for 20 years at Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale as an American history teacher, then head of the history department, and became the athletic director five years ago.

"I'm in such shock," said Kevin Buckley, a European history teacher and track coach at Kellenberg. "He was a real gentleman. He was a wonderful athletic director who let everyone do their job and really knew how to handle people. It's a complete horror."

Kellenberg baseball coach Chris Alfalla, who also coached freshman football with Solosky for 11 years, said he was "devastated" after receiving the news of his friend's death late Tuesday afternoon.

"We were very close," Alfalla said. "We've been around each other and worked together for such a long time; were pretty tight. He was a great boss, but an even better friend."
