Kings Point Park fire chars several acres

More than 100 firefighters battled a Kings Point Park brush fire Saturday that charred several acres, authorities said.
No injuries were reported and homes in the Kings Point area were not at risk, said James Hickman, head of the investigations division at the Nassau County fire marshal's office.
The fire was reported about 10 a.m., but firefighters couldn't get it under control until early evening, Hickman said.
Firefighters used heavy equipment from Kings Point and the Town of North Hempstead, including bulldozers and backhoes, to create fire breaks in the 175-acre park.
New York State forest rangers and the Nassau Office of Emergency Management assisted. A Nassau police helicopter surveyed the fire, using its infrared equipment to locate hot spots, Hickman said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
