Labriola heads to Nassau comptroller's office

Oyster Bay Town Clerk Steven Labriola is expected to resign his $114,000 elected post this week to become Nassau Comptroller George Maragos' $167,000-a-year chief deputy. Republican Labriola, 50, in his fifth term, said he was seeking a new challenge when the post opened. He replaces Frank Moroney, a top aide in the Nassau legislature.

"In politics, you have to roll the dice and be bold when the opportunities arise," Labriola said. His campaign fund has $197,000. He hoped to run for town supervisor this fall if longtime incumbent John Venditto stepped down. But Venditto and Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray will run again, Nassau GOP chairman Joseph Mondello has told party loyalists. -- Celeste Hadrick
