Last of five men sentenced in Hewlett home invasion
The last of five men who took part in a Hewlett home invasion last year was sentenced to 5 years in prison Friday for his role in the crime.
According to prosecutors, Julian Nunez, 21, of Lindenhurst, and three others broke down the back door of a Broadway apartment with a sledgehammer on May 29, 2009. A fifth male, who was a juvenile, remained outside with the vehicle.
The men, who carried a rifle and shotgun and wore masks, believed the apartment contained cash and drugs, but broke into the wrong home. When the homeowner went to investigate the banging on her door, the door shattered and hit her in the face, injuring her.
The four other men have all pleaded guilty to their involvement in the crime and are awaiting sentencing.
"Nobody deserves to suffer the violent and horrifying violation that this innocent family did," said Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice in a statement. "Now that the final defendant in this case is headed to prison, hopefully the victims in this case will regain some of the security these men so violently stole."
