Legis. Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence) worries aloud that Nassau police have targeted him for supporting precinct realignment. He said he was pulled over two weeks ago in Hewlett for allegedly changing lanes without signaling. The officer recognized his name and let him go, Kopel said. "He said, 'You're not a friend but I'll throw you some courtesy this time.' "
Last week, his wife, Esther, was ticketed for passing a stop sign, which she denies, after he says the officer said, "Your husband is no friend of ours."
"Do I have proof certain that they're trying to harass us? No. But it sure as heck feels like it. I generally speaking do not believe in coincidence," he said. PBA union president James Carver said, "I think the bottom line is: Did she violate the traffic law or didn't she?"-- Celeste Hadrick
