Two Levittown schools were on lockdown for three hours Monday during a police standoff in which a nearby resident refused to let in officers who had been asked to check on his welfare, Nassau authorities said.
The situation began shortly after 8 a.m., when officers responding to a 911 call of a man acting suspiciously knocked on the door of his Carriage Lane home -- only to have a man refuse to open the door or to come out to talk, police said. The man's name had not been released Monday night.
Believing him to be a danger to himself and others, the department sent in crisis negotiators, emergency services police and special operations units. Police cordoned off the area around his home.
The crisis ended about 3 p.m., when the man, 62, was removed and taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation, police said.
There were no injuries and no one else was in the house, police said. No weapons were recovered.
A spokeswoman for the Levittown school district said lockdowns at Division Avenue High School and Summit Lane Elementary School were declared at 11 a.m. and lifted shortly before 2 p.m.With Ellen Yan
