Bicycles came out of hibernation and skateboards were once again under the feet of teens in T-shirts as Stephanie Heilbrun stood on the Main Street sidewalk in Farmingdale, savoring the warmth.
"It's like the perfect spring day -- in January," the bartender said, taking a break outside the Wild Wild West Saloon.
The 22-year-old from Massapequa Park was joined by patron Anthony Lucchese Jr., 49, a plumber and handyman.
"It's like barbecue weather," he said.
Across Long Island and New York, records fell Saturday as temperatures soared -- at least for a day.
The high temperature was 62 degrees at the National Weather Service station in Upton, shattering the record for the date of 54.5, set in 1995.
At Islip, the mercury reached 60 degrees, 5 degrees warmer than the previous mark set in 2007. Kennedy Airport's high was also 60, eclipsing the 2007 record of 56.
Ann Marie O'Hehir basked in the sun Saturday with her daughter Jaqueline and husband James, but wasn't taking any chances. She kept her pink winter coat on.
"The sun is so warm, but once it drops the chill sets in," said O'Hehir, 41, of Farmingdale.
The warm spell didn't last long -- a cold front rolled in late Saturday.
"What we experienced the past week was quite a temperature roller coaster," said Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro.
The area forecast for the next two weeks, he said, calls for cooler-than-average temperatures.
Islip is supposed to reach a high of 45 degrees Sunday, with lows in the 20s overnight.
