Two new HOV entrances to the Long Island Expressway have been added in Nassau, state transportation officials announced Tuesday.

One is on the eastbound side and the other on the westbound side between Exits 37 and 38 in the Roslyn Heights and East Hills areas.

Joan McDonald, state transportation commissioner, said there had been several requests from the public to add entrances for easier access to the high occupancy vehicle lanes. The new entrances will encourage more drivers to use the lanes, she said.

"Thousands of Long Islanders use the High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes on the LIE every day, saving time and money while helping to improve air quality and protect the environment by reducing the number of cars on the road," McDonald said in a news release.

LIE HOV lanes may be used by vehicles with two or more passengers and by certain limited emissions/energy efficient vehicles. The rules are in effect weekdays 6-10 a.m. and 3-8 p.m.
