Lindenhurst man pleads guilty in home improvement scam, officials say
A Lindenhurst man accused of roaming the country scamming homeowners pleaded guilty Tuesday in Nassau County to charges of taking money from 12 people for home improvement work he never performed, the district attorney's office said.
When he was finally arrested last year in Harrison, N.Y., Anthony Delmaro had stolen about $1 million from homeowners in several states by failing to perform work he had contracted to do, police there said at the time.
Delmaro, 42, and his family would send out mass faxes under corporate names such as Strong Island, Island-Tec Roofing and Ace Roofing, officials said. Once hired, they would collect payments, either without performing the work or finishing it, officials said.
"The investigation revealed that Mr. Delmaro had been traveling the country for close to 10 years from Texas to New York, performing the same scam in each state he passed through," Harrison police said at the time.
Delmaro used numerous aliases, addresses and cellphones to elude authorities, police said.
He faces sentencing July 9 by Judge Alan Honorof in County Court in Mineola.
The agreed-upon sentence is 31/3 to 10 years in prison and civil penalties of $392,590 and $189,590 for his victims, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Delmaro was sentenced earlier this month in Westchester County to 2 to 6 years in prison for frauds there. He faces sentencing in Suffolk County next month on his guilty plea to similar charges.
