LIRR: Card skimmers discovered at ticket machines in Baldwin

The Long Island Rail Road has found evidence of a scheme to steal credit card and ATM numbers from ticket-buying customers at the Baldwin station.

LIRR officials said Monday that railroad workers discovered card reading devices and tiny hidden cameras at automatic ticket vending machines at Baldwin during routine inspections last week. The LIRR immediately notified the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police, who are investigating and have identified a suspect, the railroad said.

LIRR President Helena Williams and MTA Police Chief Michael Coan Monday urged customers who used credit or debit cards at the station recently to check with their banks or credit cards companies for unusual activity.

"The LIRR and the MTA Police will continue regular monitoring of TVMs and we ask the riding public to help by keeping their eyes open and reporting any suspicious activity at our stations," the railroad said in a statement.

Just last week, a Queens couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy and larceny charges for using similar devices to steal financial information from several LIRR customers at stations on the Port Washington line last year.
