At least one person was believed injured and one LIRR train was delayed Tuesday afternoon when a car crashed into a utility pole and crossing gate near the tracks west of Island Park, officials said.
There were no details available about the accident or about who was injured, Nassau County police said. Police said the accident occurred at Long Beach Road and Nassau Lane shortly before 1 p.m.
Long Island Rail Road spokesman Aaron Donovan said in a telephone interview shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday that the 12:11 p.m. from Penn Station, due in Long Beach at 1:04 p.m., was 72 minutes late, but no other service disruptions were expected due to the crash.
A police spokeswoman said the accident happened when a car “crashed into a pole and then into a gate.” She said the accident was still being investigated.
“There was debris all over the place and I think there was one injury,” the spokeswoman added.
Photos from the scene showed the crossing gate had been knocked down.
