LIRR: 'No issue' with suspicious package

Service on the Ronkonkoma branch of the Long Island Rail Road was suspended for about an hour Tuesday morning after police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious package at the Farmingdale station.

The 911 call was received at 7:39 a.m., police said.

"It was an unattended package out in the parking lot," LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto said. "The police came, inspected it and cleared it. There was no issue with the package."

A railroad spokesman said service was temporarily suspended between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma. The suspension affected two westbound trains and one eastbound train.

The first westbound train, the 7:57 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma, scheduled to arrive at Penn Station at 9:17 a.m., operated 57 minutes late, Zambuto said. The second westbound train, the 8:31 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma, was canceled and riders were accommodated by bus service.

That cancellation was caused by a scheduled midday summer track work, Zambuto said.

Customers normally ride buses between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma during track work hours, Zambuto said.

One eastbound train also was delayed, Zambuto said.
