Commuters on the LIRR were advised Thursday that there might be delays, cancellations and track changes during the evening commute because of an Amtrak derailment.

"We are asking people at Penn Station to listen for announcements about track changes and services changes," Long Island Rail Road spokesman Aaron Donovan said.

Trains were still running at or close to schedule shortly after 5 p.m., the agency said.

He said the problem stemmed from the derailment Thursday afternoon of an Amtrak train in the Sunnyside Yards in Queens.

On Tuesday, a New Jersey Transit train derailed near Penn Station, forcing Amtrak and New Jersey Transit to share a track, and causing delays and cancellations in the evening commute for LIRR riders.
