LIRR stations in Cedarhurst, Lawrence add cameras after hate speech
The Long Island Rail Road has installed security cameras at the Cedarhurst and Lawrence LIRR stations after swastikas were scrawled at the stations, Assemb. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach) said.
Kaminsky called on the LIRR to install cameras after a swastika was found etched into glass in Cedarhurst in early January. The LIRR removed the graffiti, but new hate speech was written at the station Jan. 12. Another swastika was found at the Lawrence LIRR station in August.
The LIRR agreed to add cameras in February, but they were added to both stations this week. Kaminsky said the cameras are needed to deter future hate crimes and help police identify suspects.
"I commend the LIRR for installing these security cameras and for standing with me to eradicate hate graffiti," Kaminsky said.
