LIRR: Train delayed by report of gun
A train from Penn Station to Long Beach was delayed more than a half-hour Tuesday morning in Valley Stream after a passenger overhead two men on board talking about carrying a loaded gun, officials said.
The Long Island Rail Road said the eastbound 8:45 a.m. train, which was scheduled to arrive in Long Beach at 9:36 a.m., was carrying about 100 passengers and was delayed for 31 minutes at the station.
A railroad spokesman said the two men left the train before Nassau County police and Metropolitan Transportation Authority arrived, and police said neither man, nor any weapon, was found during a subsequent canvas of the area.
A Nassau police spokeswoman said the female passenger who reported the incident to a conductor before the arrival of the train at Valley Stream never saw a weapon, either.
"A woman on the train overheard two men speaking about how they had a gun," LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan told Newsday. "No gun was seen, no one brandished a gun. Both men got off at Valley Stream and police canvassed the area, but found nothing."
No one was injured, officials said.
