A Long Island Rail Road commuter train struck a vehicle Thursday evening that was on the tracks at a roadway crossing near the Farmingdale station, police and railroad officials said.

The 5:41 p.m. train due in to Ronkonkoma at 6:49 p.m. struck the vehicle at the Elizabeth Street grade crossing, about 6:30 p.m., Nassau police said.

Information concerning possible occupants of the car and any possible injuries was not immediately available from police or LIRR officials.

Aaron Donovan, an Metropolitan Transit Authority spokesman, said there were about 950 passengers onboard the train. Passengers on that train were able to exit through the train cars onto the Farmingdale station platform, Donovan said.

No information was immediately available concerning residual delays on that line.
