LIRR train strikes person in Glen Cove; service restored
Service on the LIRR Oyster Bay branch was restored Sunday evening after a two-hour suspension when a person was struck by a train in Glen Cove.
At about 7:50 p.m., LIRR officials posted on Twitter that service had been restored in both directions between Jamaica, Queens, and Oyster Bay, after they suspended service shortly after 5:45 p.m.
LIRR officials posted on Twitter that service was temporarily suspended in both directions due to an “unauthorized person” being struck by a train in Glen Cove.
LIRR spokeswoman Meredith Daniels said the male victim was struck west of the Glen Cove station, near the Elm Avenue crossing, and was taken to North Shore University Hospital. Daniels said the victim’s condition was not immediately known.
An MTA source familiar with the situation said the victim walked under the lowered gates at the Elm Avenue crossing, and was knocked to the side by the train. The source said the man was still alive when first responders arrived, and smelled of alcohol. He was transported to the hospital in serious condition.
