LIRR: Trespasser who fell on tracks hit by train

A man who authorities said was trespassing on Long Island Rail Road property was struck and injured by an eastbound freight train early Monday near the Hicksville station.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority identified the man as Gary Williams, 29, of Wyandanch, and said he was transported to Nassau University Medical Center with a fractured right leg, a fractured right elbow and a cut to his left ear. His condition was not known Monday morning.

MTA police said Williams was struck by a New York & Atlantic Railway freight train near the station at about 1:20 a.m. Police said the train's engineer reported seeing "the individual lying between the rails as he entered the station," but he "could not stop his train before striking him."

Video from the station later obtained by MTA police showed Williams "walking along the platform, then falling onto the tracks," a railroad spokesman told Newsday.

Railroad spokesman Salvatore Arena said: "It is unclear at this time why Williams fell, but MTA police believe his fall to be accidental." The incident remains under investigation.
