A 56-year-old Douglaston woman who officials said jumped in front of a train at the Douglaston Long Island Rail Road station Tuesday night remained in critical condition Wednesday at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

Railroad spokesman Salvatore Arena said an investigation by Metropolitan Transportation Authority police determined the woman “leaped in front of the train” from the “extreme west end” of the south side platform just as the train entered at about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday. The woman suffered a severed leg and blunt force injuries, Arena said.

The woman was struck by the 8:48 p.m. train from Penn Station as it was entering the station, another railroad spokesman, Aaron Donovan said.

The train that struck the woman was canceled at Douglaston and passengers were transferred to buses, he said.
