Locust Valley Central School District: School Voter Guide 2012

6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bayville Intermediate School, Ann MacArthur Primary School and Brookville Reformed Church.

THE BUDGET

The district proposes a $76,571,521 budget for 2012-13, a 3.79 percent increase over the current $73,776,262 budget. The local tax levy would rise 2.61 percent, from $70,617,762 to $72,462,021. This increase is within the state's tax-cap limit of 2.68 percent, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget.

The district said it could not supply information on school taxes paid on the average single-family home pending county and state assessments and aid information.

The budget includes a 2.17 percent increase in teacher salaries with a cap on step increases. Two administrative positions would be eliminated.

Two ballot propositions involve the capital reserve fund, and the district says voter approval will not result in any increase in cost to taxpayers.

The first allows the school board to establish a 2012 capital reserve fund for future projects, with any proposed project requiring voter authorization. The money would come from fund balances or reserves over the next five years, to a maximum amount of $5 million.

The other proposition would authorize the school board to spend $1.5 million from the capital reserve fund established in 2009 for projects including heating system upgrades at the middle school/high school, parking-lot expansion at Bayville Intermediate School and stage and ventilation upgrades at Locust Valley Intermediate School and the middle school/high school.
