Long Beach boardwalk will get sunscreen dispensers

Long Beach City Council members have approved adding sunscreen dispensers on the boardwalk.
City officials are adding the sunscreen dispensers using a three-year $90,000 grant from NYU Winthrop Hospital. Winthrop will pay the city $30,000 for the first two years to cover the cost of the sunscreen dispensers and $15,000 for the third year. Long Beach will also receive $5,000 each year for hosting the sunscreen dispensers.
The resolution was approved during last week’s City Council meeting.
The sunscreen dispensers will be filled with SPF 30 after awarding a bid to Florida-based Destination Brands International sun care with Winthrop. The sponsorship is responsible for maintaining the dispensers, at no cost to the city, according to a City Council resolution.
The 14 dispensers will be located at entrance ramps on the boardwalk, leading to the beach.
Long Beach follows other communities such as the Town of Hempstead, New York City and Miami Beach that offer automatic sunscreen dispensers on the beach.
Hempstead Town officials installed 25 dispensers at town beaches and pools using a $25,000 grant from South Nassau Communities Hospital.
