Long Beach school gets another $2.4M from FEMA for Sandy damage

Long Beach received its last check from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help pay for damages superstorm Sandy inflicted on an elementary school, New York's U.S. senators said Wednesday.

The $2.4 million reimbursement FEMA approved for West Elementary School follows an earlier award of $3.1 million.

West Elementary was one of the city's worst-hit buildings. The first floor was flooded, damaging everything from books and computers to boilers, wiring, walls, floors and shelves.

Long Beach's schools were closed for 10 days after the storm, and West Elementary did not reopen until September 2013.

"This $2.4 million federal investment means that students at West Elementary School are educated in a safe, well-equipped and learning-friendly environment once again," said Sen. Charles Schumer, a Democrat.
