GARDEN CITY PARK/Gas leak near apartments sends 5 to the hospital

Eleven Garden City Park residents were exposed to a natural gas leak, police said Friday.

Officers responded to the apartment building and deli at 2246 Jericho Tpke. about 12:40 a.m. Friday, Nassau County police said.

Five of the residents complained of nausea and were taken to hospitals by the Garden City Park Fire Department, police said. The other six declined medical treatment at the scene.

National Grid responded to the incident early Friday but was unable to determine the exact source of the leak, said Elizabeth Margulies, a National Grid spokeswoman.

Margulies said workers turned off the gas to the apartments, a nearby pizzeria, and the deli early Friday. She said the gas was later turned back on at the pizzeria. But after inspecting a stove at the deli, utility workers decided not to restore gas there.

Margulies said National Grid told the deli to have the stove checked by a contractor and repaired if needed.
