Man arrested fleeing burglarized Hicksville home, police say

A New Cassel man was arrested and charged with burglary after he was caught outside a Hicksville home Saturday afternoon, Nassau County police said.
Police said they received a call at 2:45 p.m. reporting a burglary on Willoughby Avenue.
When they arrived, officers said they found the front and back doors of the house open. As the officers entered the front door, they said Lorenzo Velasquez slipped out a side door.
Velasquez, 24, was then confronted by three officers who were in the backyard, police said.
Police said copper pipes in the home's basement had been cut, causing flood damage. They said they also found Velasquez's backpack, which they said contained assorted tools.
While police said that Velasquez initially gave the officers a false name and date of birth, police said they discovered his true identity and found he had an open warrant for his arrest. That stems from a January 2013 arrest on a misdemeanor charge of selling marijuana for which he received a desk appearance ticket.
Velasquez was charged with second-degree burglary, false personation and possession of burglar tools. At his arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead, Velasquez was ordered held on $8,000 cash bail or $15,500 bond. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
