Central Islip man charged in burglary of Elmont home, church
A Central Islip man was arrested Sunday and charged with two burglaries in Elmont involving a local church and residence, Nassau County police said.
Police said after taking a gold cup and bowl at about 6 a.m. from St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church in Elmont, Ludgy Rely, 24 was found at a local home with the items.
Police said they were responding to a home on Hoffman Avenue in search of a "suspicious male knocking and yelling at the front door." Police said they found Rely, of 9 Oakdale Ave., attempting to enter from the rear entrance, and noted that he was pulling glass shards from a broken window. The owner of the house was not home when the burglary occurred, authorities said.
Police said they found two plastic bags containing the items inside the window. Authorities said they continued to investigate and found that Rely had taken the items from the church at 631 Elmont Rd. after breaking a window and entering.
Rely will be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead. He is charged with second degree burglary (attempt), third degree burglary, second degree criminal mischief and third degree criminal mischief.
