Nassau County police identified the 19-year-old driver killed in a three-car crash in Lynbrook, when his vehicle collided with two others, as village resident Nasir Reid.

They said he sustained "extensive internal injuries" in the crash just after midnight on Tuesday, and died at a hospital at 1:25 a.m.

Police said Thursday that the cause of the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Peninsula Boulevard, remains under investigation.

Reid was "involved in a police encounter with Nassau Police" before the crash, department spokesman Lt. Richard LeBrun said in a statement on Thursday, though he did not elaborate. The department's homicide squad and the office of New York State Attorney General Letitia James are investigating, LeBrun added.

The attorney general's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the nature of any investigation.

Reid was driving a 2009 BMW southbound on Ocean Avenue when it was involved in a collision with a Nissan Pathfinder, according to a Nassau County Police Department news release. After colliding with the Pathfinder, the release said the BMW then struck a 2019 Ram pickup truck stopped at a traffic light.

The three other people involved in the collision —  a man, 57, who was the driver of the Pathfinder, and his passenger, a woman, 51, and a man 38, the driver of the pickup — were transported by Lynbrook Fire Department ambulances to local hospitals for treatment of what were described as “minor injuries.”

Reid played football at Roosevelt High School and, as a 6-foot-2-inch 195-pound lineman, was a key member of both the offensive and defensive lines in 2019, coach Joe Vito said.

Reid played defensive end and offensive right tackle for the Rough Riders, and Vito said he drew interest from at least one college team — Western Connecticut State University, an NCAA Division III team — but instead chose to pursue becoming an auto tech.

“He was one of those guys that always played to the whistle,” Vito said of Reid, calling him a “grinder.”
