The Lynbrook Fire Department named its headquarters Sunday in honor of a former chief who died in August.

James McDermott is the only firefighter to hold the position of chief twice in the department’s 116-year history, according to the Lynbrook Fire Department website.

McDermott joined the department’s Rescue Hook, Ladder and Bucket Co. 1 in 1980 and was chief from 2005 to 2006 and then again from 2015 to 2016, the website said.
He died in August at age 55, the website said.

On Sunday, the fire department dedicated its headquarters on Wright Avenue to McDermott and unveiled a bronze plaque and new sign in front of the building.

McDermott’s family attended the ceremony, as did officials from the village, state and Town of Hempstead, the website said. Firefighters from Lynbrook and surrounding communities also came.
