Macy's clerk charged in gift card scam
A sales clerk for Macy's in Hicksville was arrested Wednesday after she validated gift cards without paying for them and then fraudulently purchased almost $2,000 worth of items, police said.
Angel Martinez, 20, of Walnut Lane, Hicksville, was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and second-degree falsifying of business records. She is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Nassau County police said that Martinez was employed as a sales clerk at the Broadway Mall and validated "numerous" Macy's gift cards worth $2,150 -- all without payment.
Then, police said, between Saturday and Wednesday, Martinez purchased $1,950 worth of goods at various Macy's department stores using those cards.
It was not clear what kinds of items were purchased.
