A Hempstead man is to be arraigned Saturday on attempted murder, weapons and robbery charges in the shooting of a driver at a Hempstead intersection earlier in the week, police said.

Corey S. Heard, 25, of 47 Mason St., entered the 2001 Honda driven by the 24-year-old victim just before 7:30 p.m. on Monday, at the corner of Nassau Parkway and Allen Street, Nassau County police said.

Heard attempted to take the vehicle's keys after the victim put the car in gear, police said, and when he was unsuccessful Heard shot the victim in the right leg then fled the scene on foot northbound on Nassau Parkway.

The victim, who's identity was not released, was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound.

Heard is charged with attempted second-degree murder, attempted second-degree robbery, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is expected to be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Nassau police late Friday also announced a second arrest in the case. Police did not provide the circumstances of either arrest.

Brian Tonery, 22, of 28 Glendra Dr., Deer Park, was charged with attempted first-degree robbery and attempted second-degree robbery, police said.

Police did not detail Tonery's alleged role.

He was ordered held on $100,000 bond, or $50,000 bail, at his arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead. He is due to return to court July 30.
