A woman waiting for a bus in Inwood was robbed Friday by a man armed with a handgun who officers arrested a short time later, police said.

Jesse J. Melville, 27, of 49 Arlo Rd., Staten Island, was charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The woman, 67, was waiting at Henry Street and Wanser Avenue shortly before 2:30 p.m., police said, when Melville approached her, revealed a gun under his shirt and demanded money.

Melville took her pocketbook containing personal items and cash, police said, and fled east on Wanser Avenue.

Responding Nassau officers captured Melville on Doughty Boulevard and Redfern Avenue, and a handgun believed used in the robbery was later recovered, police said.

Melville was to be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.
