Man arrested in burglary of Mineola store, cops say

A New Hyde Park man has been arrested in the burglary of a Mineola store on Saturday morning, police said.

Nassau County police arrested Charles M. Schulz, 23, of 147 N. Sixth St. Police said Schulz was walking on Willis Avenue when he smashed the front window of The Lucky Mini Mart at 209 Willis Ave. Police said they did not know what Schulz used to break the window and it was unclear if anything was taken.

Schulz fled on foot and went into a First Street apartment through an unlocked window, police said, waking the man who lived there.

Schulz confronted the man, 39, and, after a brief struggle in which the resident suffered minor injuries, Schulz fled empty-handed, police said. The authorities were called and, a short time later, police arrested Schulz on Garfield Street, police said.

Schulz is charged with first-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
