First Squad detectives on Monday arrested a man in connection with the theft of a statue from a Freeport church last month.

Nassau County police said Victor Wilson, 46, was arrested on a charge of grand larceny relating to the theft of a statue of St. Joseph from the grounds of the Our Holy Redeemer Church at 37 S. Ocean Ave. on Sept. 21.

Police said another statue -- of St. Francis of Assisi -- was moved at about the same time but was not damaged. The stolen statue was recovered a few days later, according to news reports.

Wilson, whose home address was unavailable, police said, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on a charge of fourth-degree grand larceny at First District Court in Hempstead.
